The Mogadishu Lighthouse, once a proud beacon for the city’s harbor, has deteriorated over time, mirroring the broader decline of Mogadishu due to political and social unrest. Despite its near-ruin condition, it remains an important landmark, symbolizing Mogadishu’s past glory and offering hope for the future.
Perched at the edge of Mogadishu’s Old Harbor, the Mogadishu Lighthouse was erected over a century ago to guide ships into the harbor. Over the years, as trade declined and Somalia faced political and social turmoil, the lighthouse fell into disrepair. About 20 years ago, it was abandoned, reflecting the larger struggles facing the city. Today, the lighthouse stands in near ruin, marked by bullet holes, but it still holds a significant place in the landscape of Mogadishu. While its former function has been forgotten by many, it now serves as a refuge for homeless fishermen. Its silhouette against the horizon acts as a powerful reminder of the city’s past prosperity and a symbol of resilience and hope for the future.
