London Design Biennale

In 2018, we were invited to represent Somalia at the London Design Biennale, where we showcased our exhibition "What Remains." The exhibition highlighted the impact of the Somali Civil War on the nation’s architectural legacy, focusing on the fragments and relics that tell a story of resilience and hope. It was a tribute to Somalia's past while also looking toward its future, aiming to showcase the power of design in evoking emotions and fostering global empathy.

Overview

At the London Design Biennale in 2018, we were part of a group of 40 countries and cities exhibiting at Somerset House. Our exhibition, "What Remains," explored the profound effects of the Somali Civil War on the country’s architectural heritage. Despite the destruction, we chose to focus on the remnants of Somalia’s once-grand buildings as a symbol of resilience, hope, and the enduring Somali spirit. The exhibition aimed to send a message that even in the face of devastation, there is potential for renewal. The experience taught us valuable lessons: first, that beauty can still emerge from devastation; second, how design has the power to bridge cultures and foster understanding; and third, the importance of preserving memories as a way to rebuild while honoring the past. The exhibition helped raise global awareness of Somalia’s culture and history, and many visitors left with a deeper appreciation for the challenges and resilience of the Somali people.
