The Benadir Regional Administration building, just like any other buildings in Mogadishu stood still whilst the civil war was going on, despite its surrounding buildings being torn apart this building as the government buildings stood still during the war. Benadir is an administrative region in southern Somalia, it covers the same area as the city of Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, although by far the smallest administrative region in Somalia, it has the largest population. Benadir is derived from the Persian bandar, which means “port”, in reference to the coastal cities of Mogadishu and Barawa. The name reflects the region’s medieval position as a key trade centre with Persia and Arabian Peninsula. Benaadir is also known for its local breed of goats. The building is now occupied by the Mayor of Mogadishu, and serves the city of Mogadishu.
